The nose is the most remarkable structure that defines the characteristic of the face. You are the right candidate for an aesthetic nose surgery (rhinoplasty) if you are not happy with the shape and size of your nose and have breathing problems. Rhinoplasty should be performed in an operating room setting. The operation usually lasts 1-2 hours in average. The patient is usually required to stay overnight in the hospital following the surgery. You can return to your social activities within 1-3 days as recommended by your surgeon. It is necessary that you discuss all your expectations clearly with your plastic surgeon following the examination whether it is an aesthetic or functional operation. You should inform your surgeon about the previous operations you underwent, if any, and the drugs you are currently receiving. Your surgeon will explain the post-operative process and the risks concerning the operation in detail during this meeting...
Aesthetic nasal surgery is performed under general anesthesia. During the surgery, dorsal and nasal tip corrections are made to resolve patient’s problem by incisions within the nostrils and tip of the nose.
Corrections may also address septal deviation and concha hyperthrophy, which result in difficulty in breathing.
Or a reduction operation is performed if a decision was made to reduce the nostrils of a patient during the preoperative meeting. It is important to achieve breathing relief with the best cosmetic result.
At the end of the operation, gauze drip pads are placed into the nostrils and the nose is covered with a splint. Although usually you are required to stay overnight after a 1-2 hour operation, you may be occasionally discharged on the same day of the operation..
You may experience swelling on your eye-lids, face, and nose as well as headache and fatigue after the surgery. Pain usually can be controlled by painkillers. Swellings and bruises can be minimized by applying ice as recommended by your surgeon. Since the nostrils will be blocked by gauze drip pads, you may have to breathe through your mouth during the first couple of days. After removal of drip pads on postoperative day 2 or 3, you may start breathing slowly through your nostrils. But the difficulty in breathing may continue for a few months in some patients. The splint placed to maintain the shape of the nose will be removed by your surgeon approximately after one week and a small bandage may be used, if required. The patient should be cautioned against wearing glasses, taking sun-bath and to keep his/her nose against any impact or shock for a period of 3 months after the surgery. As in all surgical operations, there are some potential risks and complications in rhinoplasty as well. Early postoperative risks include infection, bleeding, and anesthetic risks while problems that may occur in the shape of the nose are among the late risks. In some cases, a second intervention may be necessary. The sutures on the tip of the nose are removed approximately at days 5-7. Intranasal sutures are absorbable. Pink or light red discharge from the nostrils may be observed after the surgery, which is an expected situation during the first few days. You will be instructed how to apply massage to your nose by your surgeon to accelarate the recovery following removal of the cast. Although most of the swellings is gone after 1 to 3 months, final appearance may be achieved after 6 to 12 months.
